About this event
Join us for a LIVE -- and lively -- discussion of Margaret Atwood's Hag-Seed before seeing the long-anticipated dramatic adaptation of the novel to be produced by Prison Performing Arts (PPA) at the Northeast Correctional Center (NECC) in Bowling Green, Missouri on Thursday, May 19.
Professor of English and frequent PPA collaborator, Beth Charlebois will facilitate the discussion of Atwood's 2016 novel as an adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Tempest; and address how her fictional setting of a Shakespeare-in-prison program sets the stage for playwright Stacie Lents' adaptation, commissioned by PPA to be performed by incarcerated actors in an actual correctional center.
Participants will come away not only with an understanding of Atwood's novel as an adaptation of The Tempest, but also a heightened ability to appreciate the array of creative choices made by the playwright, directors, and actors in adapting the novel for the stage at NECC.
Discussion attendees will have the opportunity to complete required paperwork to attend a performance at NECC.
Familiarity with Atwood's novel and/or Shakespeare's The Tempest is encouraged but neither is required!
